Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)

Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)

Abdominoplasty is a cosmetic surgery treatment option for treating excess skin and fat in the abdominal area. Throughout treatment, excess skin and fat is removed from the abdomen to improve abdominal contour. Abdominoplasty can be a great treatment option for patients with loose tissues after pregnancy or after weight loss. Often the skin and fat have been stretched excessively and will not return to their original state, so abdominoplasty can be a great solution. If muscles have also been stretched excessively, then muscle tightening may be appropriate.

Abdominoplasty is performed under sedation, it involves infiltration of tumescent local anaesthetic into the abdomen and surrounding areas, and liposuction performed. An ellipse of skin will then be excised. A new belly button may be created depending on the amount of tissue excised. Abdominal muscle may be tightened if necessary. Skin borders are then sutured together.

There will be a scar, usually situated below the upper underpants line. The scar can vary in length depending on the amount of tissue that needs to be excised.

As with any serious cosmetic medical procedure, there are risks associated. Your cosmetic medical professional will discuss these with you during your consultation and before the procedure.

  • You will need 2-4 weeks off work depending on the physical demand of your work.
  • Heavy lifting or strenuous exercise should be avoided for 6 weeks.
  • You will need to wear a compression garment for 3 weeks after the procedure to minimize swelling/bruising, and support the repaired tissues.
  • Please avoid smoking for a month or longer prior to surgery and also during the recovery period. Nicotine reduces blood flow to the wound, prolonging healing, increase risk of infection, and can produce poorer scars.
  • The scar you produce will be limited by the type of scar your body grows. This may vary from one part of your body to another.
  • Final result and recovery will take 3-6 months, with further fading of scars thereafter.
